So many people think you have to be good at art to do art therapy. And they see "good" as "good" by society standards, which so many automatically think is representational art.
Well to that I make a few points:
1. Not all art has to be representational to be "good".
There is a successful series of cartoons on YouTube strictly drawn with stick figures. There are artists that paint 1-inch squares on massive canvases that are praised for their creativity.
2. Art doesn't have to be "good".
Do you enjoy making art? That's all that matters.
3. Drawing and painting aren't the only kind of art.
Can't draw? That's fine. Try making jewelry, or photography with your fancy phone camera - up the contrast and make it black and white and you've got yourself a decent photo- try making floral arrangements, collage, sculptures with random materials. Art is so much more than just drawing or painting.
4. Anyone can art
Just because you can't (or think you can't) draw or paint just means those aren't your medium.
In art therapy we can try different media, different techniques, different images. As long as it helps you to make your point or helps you feel better, that's all that matters.
Get out there and make art all you creative people!
